Missed the Tax Deadline? Here’s What to Do Next

April 15 is here — and if you’re not ready to file your taxes by 11:59PM tonight, take a breath. You still have options to avoid penalties and keep your finances on track.

At NexGen Accounting, we’re not a tax filing firm — but we do work closely with trusted partners to ensure our clients are fully prepared when tax season rolls around. When things don’t go quite as planned, we’re here to help you understand your next steps.

1. File for an Extension — Today

If you need more time, you can request a six-month extension by submitting IRS Form 4868. This gives you until October 15, 2025 to file your return.

You can do this by:

• Using IRS Free File

• Working directly with your tax preparer (like Ascend Tax)

• Making a payment online and choosing “extension” as the reason

Important: An extension to file is not an extension to pay. If you owe taxes, your payment is still due today (April 15) to avoid penalties and interest.

2. Pay What You Can Now

If you can’t pay the full amount due, paying something is always better than nothing. The IRS reduces penalties and interest based on what you’ve already paid.

You can also set up:

Short-term payment plans

Long-term installment agreements

Need help understanding your numbers or where you stand? That’s where NexGen steps in — we help you see the big picture and make informed decisions that support your business and personal finances.

3. Didn’t File or Extend? Don’t Wait

If today slips by and you don’t file or request an extension, file your return as soon as possible to minimize penalties. The IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of 5% per month, up to 25% of the unpaid amount.

The sooner you take action, the more control you’ll have over the outcome.

4. Expecting a Refund? You’ve Got Time

If you’re due a refund, there’s no penalty for filing late — but you have a limited window to claim it. Taxpayers have three years to file and receive their refund. For 2021 returns, that window closes April 15, 2025.

5. Disaster Relief May Extend Your Deadline

If you live in a federally declared disaster area, you might already have an extension:

Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee residents: Extended to November 3, 2025

Certain California counties (including Los Angeles): Extended to October 15, 2025

Check IRS.gov for the latest updates.

6. Need a Trusted Tax Partner? We’ve Got You

While NexGen Accounting doesn’t file taxes, we partner with professionals like Ascend Tax to make sure you’re covered.

Need a referral? We’ll connect you with someone who can file your return while we keep your books accurate, tax-ready, and aligned with your bigger goals.
